TE 846 Accommodating
Different Literacy Learners
Instructor: Goufang Li Literacy has been the main focus of my master’s degree. I can see how this could be strange to hear coming from a math and science teacher, but in my twelve years of teaching I have found that my students are able to do the math. Reading the problem proves more difficult for them. Through this course I identified ways to incorporate reading strategies into my math class to help my students with the challenge of reading in my subject areas. |
TE855 Teaching School
Mathematics
Instructor: Kevin Simpson I wanted to take this class to start my master’s program, because I feel most comfortable in the subject of math. In this class we looked at ways to challenge our students through the delivery of the material. We studied the evolution of the math curriculum and the changes that have come with the Common Core. |

ED 800 Concepts in
Education Inquiry
Instructor: Steven Weiland I believe that I learned the most about education from this class. The study of history, development, and the purpose of education helped me further develop my own philosophy of education. I particularly grew from the study of Dewey and E.D. Hirsch, taking bits from both of them. The study of different domains of inquiry not only helped me in my classroom but also in my own personal education. |
TE 843 Secondary Reading Assessments and Instruction
Instructor: Laurel Disney Through this course I expanded my understanding of the literacy needs of the secondary student. I found ways to incorporate research-based literacy strategies into my math class. As a class we studied ways to assess the literacy levels of our students and appropriate techniques to meet our students’ needs. |

TE 838 Children’s Literature in Film
Instructor: Laura Apol This was the first time in my education that I actually studied Literature. Through this course I learned about changes that happen when a novel becomes a movie, stereotypes that can be found in our movies and literature, and what drives the production of a book series and movie sequels. This course was very interesting to me as a sixth grade teacher and father of two young children. |
TE 861C Action Research K-12 in the Science and Math Classrooms
Instructor: Dawn Marie Ezzo Through this course I learned how to research topics and to back up my actions with the correct research. This class gave me the opportunity to study the application of reading strategies in math class. For this class I designed my own research topic where I studied the effects of applying certain reading strategies to my classroom |

CEP 832 Educating Students with Challenging Behavior
Instructor: Vicki Mousouli and Evelyn Oka This is another course that had immediate impact on my teaching. I was hoping this class would teach me how to get students who have challenging behaviors to be successful in my class, and that is exactly what I found. Not only did I find solutions on how to work with students with minor disabilities, but I also learned how to better work the parents of these students. These classes pointed out the importance of parental involvement in having all children succeed in school and gave me strategies to start this process. |
TE 831 Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Instructor: Erica Hamilton Bar none, this was my favorite class in the MAED program. I had the most to learn in terms of technology, and the class material could be quickly applied to my teaching. Through this class I learned how to use technologies like Glogster, Today’s Meet, and Nearpod. What made this class so valuable to me is that not only did it challenge me, but it also gave me time to use what I learned. |

TE 848 Writing Assessment & Instruction
Instructor: Kate Macaluso This is the first writing class that I have ever taken. It has opened my eyes to the challenges associated with teaching kids to write. I have spent the course thinking of ways to apply these strategies to my math and science classes. My hope is to learn to better incorporate writing into my classes to improve my students’ understanding of what is being taught in class. Since I have started teaching, I have looked for ways to teach my students to be better problem solvers. This class has given me ways to do that while having them write. |
ED 870 Capstone Portfolio Seminar
Instructor: Matthew Koelhler The Capstone Portfolio is a course that walked us through the steps of creating a digital portfolio. This is the last class that I will be taking in my master’s program, so it is to be used as one part reflection piece and one part permeation from life after school. I will be using the skills that I have learned in this class in my future science and math classes. |
